Process: Buying and Using the Vignette
Step 1: Assess Your Needs
Determine your exact needs: How long will you be driving in Austria? What vehicle are you using? Are you planning multiple trips per year? Will you be using special toll routes?
- Determine trip duration and frequency
- Identify vehicle type (car, motorcycle, motorhome)
- Research planned routes
- Set budget
Step 2: Choose Vignette Type
Choose the right vignette type based on your needs. Use our selection matrix for a quick decision guide.
- 10-Day Vignette: For short trips up to 10 days
- 2-Month Vignette: For holidays and seasonal travel
- Annual Vignette: For frequent drivers and commuters
Step 3: Choose Purchase Channel
Decide between adhesive vignette or e-vignette. For foreign licence plates, we recommend the e-vignette.
- Adhesive vignette: petrol stations, ÖAMTC/ARBÖ, tobacconists, supermarkets, border crossings
- e-Vignette: ASFINAG website or app
Step 4: Buy Vignette
Buy the vignette in good time. The e-vignette can be booked up to 18 days in advance.
- For e-vignette: enter licence plate, country of registration, vehicle category, start date, email and payment method
- Keep purchase confirmation email
- Have credit card or PayPal ready
Step 5: Attach or Activate
Adhesive vignette: attach to top-left of windscreen. e-Vignette: automatically active from start date.
- Adhesive vignette: remove protective film, press firmly
- e-Vignette: no further action required
- Keep purchase confirmation in vehicle (recommended)
Step 6: Check Validity
Check the validity of your vignette before each trip.
- Adhesive vignette: check expiry date on vignette
- e-Vignette: check purchase confirmation or ASFINAG account
- Annual vignette: valid until 31 January of the year after next
Step 7: Start Journey
With a valid vignette, you can use all Austrian motorways and expressways. Note the special toll routes.
- Brenner A13: special toll €11.00
- Tauern A10: special toll €13.50
- Arlberg S16: special toll €11.00
- Karawanken A11: special toll €8.50
Step 8: At Inspection
Stay calm and show documents. Without a valid vignette: pay replacement toll €120 or risk an administrative fine.
- Have vehicle documents ready
- Pay replacement toll immediately (cheaper than administrative fine)
- Complaint to ASFINAG possible
